Kim Kardashian Game: Kris Jenner And Glu Sued For $10 Million Over Copyright, Game Brings In $200 Million [Video]

Kris Jenner and gaming company Glu are being sued by a rival game studio over the Kim Kardashian: Hollywood mobile game. The plaintiff, Just Games Interactive Entertainment, claims they met with Jenner in 2011 over creating a Kim Kardashian game, and the momager stole the idea. According to GameSpot, Jenner and Glu are being sued for over $10 million in damages.

The Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game is a free mobile app that lets the user interact with cartoon versions of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians stars. According to the Daily Mail, Forbes estimates the game brought in over $200 million in 2014 for its in-app game purchases.

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood has over 30 million active users.

GameSpot reports that the huge revenue for the game, a portion of which goes right into the pockets of Kim Kardashian, comes from the microtransations in the Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game. Users can purchase clothing, a “burst of energy” for shopping your way through the streets of Hollywood as Kim, or any other member of the Kardashian clan.

Prices rise as high as $40 for an XL Star Pack in the hugely popular and very lucrative Kim Kardashian game. The game features cartoon characters that look like Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney Kardashian, as well as Kylie and Kendall Jenner.

GameSpot reports that users can create their own character and live the life of a celebrity like Kim Kardashian. Users can walk the red carpet, wear designer clothing, party at clubs, date, and dump celebrities in hopes of becoming the next power couple.

The game now includes a cartoon likeness of famous Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, which Kim Kardashian revealed this week on her Instagram account. Kim shared an animated photo of herself with the designer, telling Kardashian fans she is “[b]eyond excited to welcome the one and only @KarlLagerfeld and his gorgeous F/W collection to the #KimKardashianGame!”

According to the Daily Mail, the Karl Lagerfeld character is introduced in the game by Kendall, who is friends with the fashion mogul in real life. In Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, game players can purchase virtual versions of Lagerfeld’s clothing for their online character.

The Daily Mail reports that the lawsuit, which was filed in a Los Angeles federal court, alleges that Just Games Interactive Entertainment met with Kris Jenner and provided a “detailed pitch” after Jenner approached the company. After not hearing from Jenner for months, Just Games Interactive Entertainment found out that the project was dead.

According to the lawsuit, many of the elements of its detailed proposal were included in the final Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game when it was released in June, 2014, according to GameSpot.

Just Games Interactive Entertainment was not compensated for their ideas, and is seeking over $10 million in damages.

After GameSpotreached out to game company Glu, a representative told the website that “Glu views this complaint as completely frivolous.”

According to Glu, they were “never contacted by, or even heard of, the plaintiff before they filed this complaint,” and Glu asserts the idea for the app was their own. Glu insists it “independently created Kim Kardashian: Hollywood,” and the company “will defend [itself] vigorously in this matter.”

The Daily Mail reports that Kim Kardashian credits her husband, Kanye West, for encouraging her to get involved with the game. According to Kim, “Kanye really talked me into doing this partnership.”

Kardashian confessed that her husband “always wanted to do music for video games, so he thought it was the coolest thing in the world to have a video game with a character of myself.” She insisted, however, that she have “some control over the look of the character, what the character would be wearing and saying and doing.”

“I thank Kanye every day for making me do this deal,” Kim Kardashian told the Daily Mail.
