New ‘Star Wars’ Trailer From Disney Japan Brings More Dialogue And Action Footage

Disney Japan released a new Star Wars trailer on their YouTube account earlier today, and with it comes new footage. The new Star Wars trailer has fans speculating why Disney only released this trailer under their Japanese account, not even three weeks after they released the last trailer.

Nobody can be sure if this is footage they were hoping to hide from their non-Japanese audience. That would be of course impossible. Though the subtitles are in Japanese, and the YouTube account description and video title are also Japanese, the video quickly spread beyond Japan, and currently has over 682,000 views.

As the Wall Street Journal reveals, in this trailer, we get to learn a bit more about the main protagonist, Rey, the sinister Kylo Ren, and the cute little droid, BB-8. London-born Daisy Ridley plays Rey. Twenty-three-year-old Ridley doesn’t have a whole lot of acting credits, mimicking the casting of the original Star Wars trilogy, but she is looking great in these trailers. The masked Kylo Ren is played by Adam Driver. Kylo Ren has taken Darth Vader as his role model, as you can see by his admiration of Darth Vader’s burned out headpiece.

Thirty-one-year-old Driver, also an actor with a relatively young career, is known for the HBO series Girls, in which his role as Adam Sackler has garnered him award nominations. BB-8 is the droid helper of resistance pilot Poe Dameron, who has been spotted since the first teaser trailer piloting his aircraft, but it looks like BB-8 will spend more time beside Rey and Finn.

The current trailer takes a little bit of a different tone than the previous one. The next Star Wars is only a little over one month away. Disney has fans speculating on what the continuation on the Star Wars saga is going to look like. The new trailer focuses more on a few particular characters, and the next ones could focus on some others, like maybe Maz Kanata, Chewbacca and Han Solo, or Finn, though Finn’s story became clearer in the previous trailers.

Maz Kanata is played by the elegant Lupita Nyong’o, the actress most recognized for her Academy Award-winning performance in 12 Years a Slave. And as The Verge points out, there is still the looming question of Luke Skywalker, where he is, what his relation to Rey is, and what he will be doing in these new movies. Or maybe they will save him until further along in the trilogy. Harrison Ford, returning as fan favorite Han Solo, will play the major, much needed role of connecting the past to the present, as both the recent trailers show. He stands before Finn and Rey as he lets them know the stories of the past are real. The current trailer shows the relationship building between BB-8 and Rey, and Finn and Rey, along with massive destruction courtesy of Kylo Ren and his stormtroopers. Kylo Ren is also seen engaging in more lightsaber wielding action, some of it coming dangerously close to Rey.

The new trailer is more active in many ways, showing more action from the sky and on land. But much of it is destruction, and displays the odds these heroes are going to have to overcome.

Though we are getting a clearer picture of how the story will play out, and who the players are, what will be key is how this movie will end and lead into the following ones. Even if the middle is meaty and a lot of questions get answered, the resolution will have to be substantial for this movie to hold any weight in comparison with the original trilogy films. Despite all the new reveals, this Star Wars trailer still leaves us with plenty of mystery about some centrally important plot points.
