For the new season of The Vampire Diaries, Paul’s character, Stefan Salvatore, will assume the role of a hero as he tries to protect Mystic Falls from the terror brought by his Ripper mom, Lily. Paul said that Lily and her family of Heretics want to live in Mystic Falls, but certain events prompted them to kill innocent residents of the town. The gang is now scrambling to find ways on how they can defeat the ruthless group of hybrids.

Another angle fans can focus on is the development of Stefan and Caroline Forbes’s romance. As the new season progresses, Candice Accola-King told Entertainment Weekly that her character will finally take a leap of faith to be with Stefan. However, things won’t be smooth sailing because “everything else seems to be making a mess of their relationship.”

“There’s a reason why it took them seven seasons to become a relationship. All those things still exist in [their] world and they’re realising that just because they say out loud that they have feelings for each other, it doesn’t mean that… the universe is allowing them to be with one another.”

In the second episode of The Vampire Diaries Season 7, it was implied that Stefan once had a romantic involvement with heretic Valerie. Candice admitted in the EW interview that Valerie would find it easy to annoy Caroline.

The same episode likewise revealed that Caroline would end up engaged in less than three years’ time. The fiancé, however, isn’t Stefan. At one point, Caroline even told her secretary that she wouldn’t want to hear anything from Stefan anymore.

The three-year flash forward scene also featured Tyler Lockwood’s return. Will he come back to reunite with Caroline? Speculations have risen that he might be Caroline’s mysterious fiancé. In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Caroline Dries said that the team wanted to remind viewers that Tyler’s still a part of the story.

“We wanted to remind the audience that Tyler’s still very much a part of [the show’s] universe. When you’re fortunate enough to leave Mystic Falls — and not because you died — we try to exploit and embrace that. Tyler got away, so to speak, and just seeing a little glimpse of him in the show told the audience, ‘Look, three years from now, the guy’s still alive. So there’s some hope.’ “

She confirmed that The Vampire Diaries would see Tyler again especially because he’s “one of the success stories of Mystic Falls.” She didn’t divulge further information on the things Tyler did during his absence from the quaint town.

Since Tyler managed to return, some fans wondered if Elena Gilbert could do the same thing, which might be unlikely following Nina Dobrev’s decision to leave the show. Nonetheless, Paul previously assured fans that Elena still has a big part in the show. He told TV Insider that he initially thought that The Vampire Diaries Season 7 would have a “complete reboot” following Nina’s departure, but “she’s still talked about so much.”

Nina, on the other hand, still supports the show despite bagging her first film project, The Arrivals, following her decision to leave CW. “I can’t wait to see what the new season will look like. I’ll be watching. I’m very excited for my friends,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 airs every Thursday night on the CW Network.
