Microsoft Surface Book Now On Display At Microsoft Stores: Watch Out, MacBook Pro

Microsoft’s MacBook Pro killer, the Surface Book, is now on display at several locations throughout the United States. In Southern California, the Microsoft Store locations in Cerritos and Costa Mesa have Microsoft’s latest device available for you to walk in and try out. The Surface Book is also on display in Chicago, New York City, Dallas, and even Palo Alto, California. Judging from recent reviews, Microsoft’s new device may be the ultimate laptop. According to Wired, the Surface Book redefines how PCs are made.

“In fact, it’s hard to name another high-end hybrid laptop that’s quite so enticing. That puts everyone who makes Windows laptops—known as original equipment manufacturers, in trade lingo—in a curious position: What do you do when the partner that supplies your product’s brains releases a superior body?”

Laptopmag even cuts to the chase by calling it a MacBook Pro killer.

“Really, it’s all about the speed. In fact, Microsoft claims that the Core i5 or Core i7-powered Surface Book is twice as fast as the MacBook Pro. The notebook also [employs] a PCIe SSD, which is at least twice as fast as traditional, SATA-based drives. and comes in capacities ranging from 128GB to 1TB.”

The article adds that the Microsoft notebook adds a very unique fulcrum hinge that allows one to detach the display from the keyboard. There are several commenters at the Microsoft Surface Forums website, who commented on the Surface Book after seeing the display unit at the Microsoft Store.

User “mtalinm” wasn’t completely enthralled by the device like everybody else. First, he lists the positives, which include a “quite good” keyboard, big and beautiful screen, cool hinge, and the fact that it looks “appley.” However, he then goes on to talk about the negatives.

“Screen is really wobbly. of course due to the weight of having the tablet plug into. so wobbly it is hard to picture using this on my lap. probably OK on a table… like a Surface,” he claims.

He then adds that the detachable screen is too big to be used in portrait mode, and that the fact that the screen doesn’t flush with the keyboard when closed is really weird. “Sher the Love” didn’t comment on the screen and keyboard when closed, but noticed the wobbling.

“I went to the MS Store in San Diego yesterday and the screen wobble was the first thing I noticed. That is really the only thing deterring me from buying it, especially for that price. I really wish they had just gone with the Yoga type design. The hinge is solid on my TPY. No wobble at all,” the user claims.

If you haven’t preordered your Surface Book yet, you may want to go to the Microsoft Store to do so. The device is in far more demand than even Microsoft expected. Unfortunately, according to BGR, every version is sold out at Microsoft’s online store. However, contacting three different Microsoft Store retail locations reveals that if you preorder the device at a specific Microsoft Store retail location, you will be able to get the Surface Book with the configuration you want on the day of its release, October 26.
