Two NFL teams headed in opposite directions face each other live online Sunday Night, as the New York Giants watch the San Francisco 49ers limp into MetLife Stadium desperate to halt a three-game losing streak, while Coach Tom Coughlin will be looking for a way for his home team to put its third consecutive win on the board and widen its lead atop the NFC East.

The 49ers began the 2015 season promisingly enough under first-year Coach Jim Tomsula, who took over after Jim Harbaugh fled for the University of Michigan. The ‘Niners trounced the Minnesota Vikings 20-3 in Week 1, and appeared poised to, at the very least, better the 8-8 mark they produced under a lame duck Harbaugh, who appeared to spend much of 2014 looking for the exit door.

But with fifth-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick floundering, producing a dismal passer rating of 67.7, and leading ball carrier Carlos Hyde seemingly fading into ineffectiveness since rushing for 168 yards in the opener but topping out at 51 in the three games since, the San Francisco offense appears flummoxed when it comes to putting points on the board.

The 49ers haven’t again reached the 20 they put up against Minnesota, scoring just 28 over their last three games combined. So, Tomsula may be in a state of denial when he refers to his team’s current struggles as nothing but a “tough spot.”

“There’s always tough spots… Every season, every year, every career, there’s tough spots. To me, you’ve got to go through them. You don’t go around them. So, roll it up and go through it, keep going.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern Time at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

The latest Las Vegas betting line has the Giants favored by seven points.

The Giants are moving in the opposite direction, and, if not for a few bad breaks and, frankly, bad decisions, could easily be an undefeated 4-0 coming into the Sunday night game. After dropping their first two games to the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons by one and four points, respectively, the Giants beat division rivals Washington 32-21 and, last week, stopped the Buffalo Bills 24-10.

And while it could be that the Giants have simply feasted on subpar teams in the last two weeks, they will get the chance for another feast against the 1-3 49ers. But Coughlin says he is not taking anything for granted, though the game would seem to be a win in the bank for the Giants.

“The next step is the continuation to execute well, the continuation to play well together, to understand the opponent,” the 12th-year coach — the third longest-tenured coach in the NFL after Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis at 13 seasons and New England’s Bill Belichick with 16 — said on Saturday.

Will the San Francisco 49ers find a way to get their season back on a winning track? Or will the New York Giants widen their lead in the NFC East?
