‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Fans Largely Unimpressed With ‘The Bastard Executioner’: ‘Meh’

Sons of Anarchy finished forever in November 2014, and die-hard Sons of Anarchy fans are still feeling the loss. With rumors circulating about a Sons of Anarchy prequel movie starring Brad Pitt as John Teller and a Mayans spin-off show based in the present day but with little to no crossover to the world of SAMCRO, Sons of Anarchy fans have been begging for something more.

And while Kurt Sutter, writer and creator of Sons of Anarchy, has indicated that he is interested in continuing on with the world of Sons of Anarchy, at the moment, all his attention is directed towards his new project: The Bastard Executioner.

Initially, Sons of Anarchy fans couldn’t care less about The Bastard Executioner. They were more interested in picking up where the Sons of Anarchy storylines left off, but with Kurt Sutter firmly determined to give The Bastard Executioner his all in the meantime, Sons of Anarchy fans have had to at least give the new show a fair try.

As Movie Pilot reported, Sons of Anarchy fans have not been able to draw many parallels between the storylines of The Bastard Executioner and Sons of Anarchy itself. Indeed, Game of Thrones seems to be a much more fitting show to compare The Bastard Executioner to, at least in terms of historical timelines and mediaeval themes.

Fans have drawn parallels between Sons of Anarchy and The Bastard Executioner when it comes to levels of violence, blood, and gore, which seems to be more a reflection of Kurt Sutter’s inner mind than of the themes of the shows themselves.

One striking resemblance between Sons of Anarchy and The Bastard Executioner, though, is the appearance of Katey Sagal. Sagal played Gemma Teller in Sons of Anarchy, Jax Teller’s mother, who continue to play a pivotal role throughout the entire series. Sagal is back in The Bastard Executioner, playing the role of Annora of the Alders, who seems to be playing Wilkin Brattle, the main character of the series played by Lee Jones, like a puppet on a string.

Sagal is certainly an accomplished actor, having won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama in 2011 for her role in Sons of Anarchy, but many people can’t help but comment that perhaps the reason Sagal lands all of these roles is that she just happens to be married to Kurt Sutter, the creator of both Sons of Anarchy and The Bastard Executioner.

Indeed, Annora of the Alders has a sidekick of sorts in The Bastard Executioner, the Dark Mute, played by none other than Kurt Sutter himself.

Not only that, but in an interview with Vanity Fair in September, 2015, Sagal revealed that her daughter also has a role in The Bastard Executioner, and that her husband Kurt Sutter wrote the role specifically with her daughter in mind.

“I guess the most exciting experience for both of us right now is that my daughter, who is a theater major, has a part. He wrote this part sort of, I guess, [with] fingers crossed that it was going to work out, do you know what I mean? He keeps increasing her part because she’s doing such a good job, and as her family, as her parents, we’re super stoked because it would have been a real drag if she hadn’t been good.”

With nothing else on offer from Kurt Sutter for the time being, Sons of Anarchy fans have had to give The Bastard Executioner a trial run. We at least know what’s most Sons of Anarchy fans to putting on their Christmas list this year.
