‘Star Wars Battlefront’ In-Game Unlocks Will Be Based On Performance, Not Real-World Purchases

Electronic Arts wanted to put community fears to rest by officially confirming that Star Wars Battlefront won’t offer any kind of microtransaction sales. While this kind of consumer model was originally seen only within free-to-play games, many full-priced titles are also now beginning to feature these small in-app purchase. Fortunately, regardless of how gamers feel about this kind of minor in-game purchases, developer DICE is saying that microtransactions definitely won’t be tied to Star Wars Battlefront.

Speaking to Gamespot, Battlefront design director Niklas Fegraeus revealed that the only way to earn credits or purchase gear inside the upcoming reboot of the classic Star Wars gaming franchise will be through earning in-game currencies directly by playing. When asked about the possibility of microtransactions, Fergaeus stated that Star Wars Battlefront simply isn’t being designed with those kinds of in-game purchases in mind.

“The currency system is based on your game performance. The credits that you use to buy things in the game are earned. You play the game, complete challenges, and that’s how you get credits. This is a progression system based on your gameplay performance.”

Rather than relying on microtransactions, Star Wars Battlefront will feature several different kinds of in-game currencies, which players will be able to use in order to acquire new weapons and equipment. Fegraeus explained that users will be able to earn points and credits by completing a variety of different in-game activities.

“There are several systems working together here. Just doing things in the game earns you points, and those earn you credits. That’s the baseline system; the more you do, the more credits you get”

While Star Wars Battlefront is set to release on all current-gen platforms next month, gamers won’t have to wait that long for their first chance to try out the upcoming title firsthand. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, EA and DICE will be holding a public open-beta event for Star Wars Battlefront later this week across all systems. In order to make sure the game’s servers are ready for November’s launch, anyone that owns a Playstation 4, Xbox One, or PC will be able to download and play Star Wars Battlefront beginning this Thursday.

Providing additional information on what to expect from the Star Wars open-beta, Battlefront community manager Mat Everett released plenty of new details on what to expect after answering a series of questions about the upcoming event on the official Playstation Blog.

First off, the beta test will kick off this October 8. An exact start time is not yet known, but the game will be available to download on consoles once the game is ready to begin. The beta allows players to try out three different modes from Star Wars Battlefront, which includes one of the title’s co-op survival missions.

Gamers also won’t have to worry about downloading full-sized game to participate in the beta since the test event will only give players access to a small sampling of the content that will be available in the full version of Star Wars Battlefront. Users will only need to clear approximately 7GB of hard drive space for this week’s beta.

“You can try out the Star Wars Battlefront Companion experience. Available during the Beta only at www.StarWarsBattlefront.com, the Star Wars Battlefront Companion experience features the strategic card game Base Command, and lets you earn in-game Credits that unlock Star Cards, weapons, and more in Star Wars Battlefront.”

The Star Wars Battlefront beta starts on October 8, while the game is set to officially launch on November 17. Do you plan on downloading Star Wars Battlefront during this week’s test event?
