Kindergarten Student Kicked Out Of Mt. Erie Christian Academy Because She Has Two Moms

A California kindergarten student was kicked out of the Mt. Erie Christian Academy because she has two moms. The 5-year-old girl attended both preschool and summer school offerings at the academy, but was reportedly denied permission to enroll in kindergarten classes before the new school year started, just after Labor Day.

The California kindergarten student’s two moms are now filing a civil rights lawsuit against Mt. Erie Christian Academy, KGTV reports.

“It was heartbreaking,” one of the girl’s moms, Sheena, said. The woman did not want the media to use her last name in reports. “I didn’t finish the conversation with them when they took us in the room because I just, I didn’t want to look at them any longer. I just couldn’t believe that they did that. “They told us, ‘oh this is not about your child,’ but it is about my child.”

When contacting the school to discuss the kindergarten student allegedly kicked out because she has two moms, KGTV reporters said a woman who described herself as the Mt. Erie Christian Academy director answered a few questions.

The woman was asked if the California school was committing discrimination because the 5-year-old student was denied admission because her parents are lesbians. “The Bible says homosexuality is a sin. We don’t condone any sinful lifestyles,” was the answer by the woman reportedly in charge of the Christian academy in the San Diego area, MSN reports.

The Mt. Erie Christian Academy parent and student handbook was reportedly revised over the summer. In the section of the handbook which pertains to the school’s non-discrimination policy, it reportedly notes that the California academy reserves the right to “refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student.”

An excerpt from the Mt. Erie Christian Academy handbook follows, as shared by KGTV.

“This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, living in, condoning or supporting sexual immorality; practicing homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity; promoting such practices; or otherwise having the inability to support the moral principles of the school.”

The school is a private academic institution and, therefore, does reportedly have the power to exclude membership or admission on the basis or religious beliefs.

“If we knew from the beginning that this was unacceptable, they didn’t condone or believe in this, if it was such a big deal, we would have never started her off there,” Sheena added. “I would never put my child’s emotional well being in an unstable setting like that. I want my baby to be safe when she grows up. I don’t want her to ever have to be discriminated against because of her lifestyle. That’s not fair,” one of the kindergarten student’s two moms added.

When local reporters talked to the unidentified little girl, she said she misses her friends and wants to go back to school.

An excerpt follows from the Mt. Erie Christian Academy about the situation with the student with the two moms and the mounting news coverage of the decision.

“Hello Mt. Erie family! We have been informed that today Channel 10 news will be airing a story about a Biblical decision that the School board made regarding our admissions policy. We stand firmly behind our board’s decision and ask that you support us through this time. We may receive some backlash from those who do not respect our Biblical perspective, however we will continue to provide a Christian education. It’s more concerning that we have invited Channel 10 news out to cover so many of the events and programs that we have for the community however they have never shown any interest, but the first opportunity they get to talk about controversy they are willing to spend significant resources to convince you that the church must conform to the world’s beliefs and disregard our own.
