ABC Renews ‘Mistresses’ For Season 4: What’s Next For Joss And Her Friends?

ABC renewed Mistresses for another season, and the news is shocking people on the internet this weekend. ABC announced the return of the series by releasing a statement on Friday. Some fans thought the show was sure to be canceled by the network after the ratings took a dip this year.

In fact, Realty Today reported that the ratings for the Mistresses Season 3 finale were at an all-time low for the series. This would doom most shows, but ABC decided to give the series another shot.

The network said in their statement, shared by Spoiler TV, that the series would “continue to focus on the scandalous lives of a sexy and sassy group of girlfriends, each on their own path to self-discovery. When it comes to love, these girlfriends find support and guidance with each other as they push the limits, test their boundaries and discover just how far they are prepared to go.”

Mistresses Season 3 was a big test for the ABC drama. Alyssa Milano departed the series at the end of Season 2, when the series decided to move production from Los Angeles, California, to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Milano, a mother with two young children, decided to not make the move with the series. This was a huge shock to fans of the show. Many wondered if the series could survive the departure of its star. However, the series appears to have done just that. A post-Savi show aired and was picked up for a fourth season by ABC.

The Mistresses Season 3 finale did have some big moments, and it ended with a huge cliffhanger. The end of the episode had Joss standing there with a gun pointed at her.

The tearjerker moment of the episode featured Karen and Vivian, who was on her death bed. Vivian, her husband, and Karen shared a threesome during the season, and Karen is pregnant. Before she died, Vivian shot a video for the unborn baby.

Rina Mimoun and K.J. Steinberg have already teased some about Mistresses Season 4. Their teases came before ABC decided to renew the series. One of those teases is about Joss’ fate.

Will that gun pointed at her end her life? Not a chance. Joss will be alive and well when the series returns next summer. In fact, she might have a shot at love.

For Mistresses Season 3, Jennifer Esposito was brought in to fill in the spot left empty by Milano’s departure. However, she will not return to the series for Mistresses Season 4.

Rina Mimoun talked about the exit of her character to TV Line.

“We would love to invite Jennifer back for as many episodes as she’s willing or able to do, but this was a one-year character for us — at the level she’s playing this year. I mean, we were blown away by her performance, and she brings a certain sparkle, but if we’re lucky enough to get a fourth season, we might just want to find a whole different woman to inject into our foursome. We don’t want to start with so much baggage for all the other women to get through.”

What is next for Mistresses? Is a romance between Karen and Alec possible? Mimoun teased the possibility, but Steinberg felt that the relationship between the pair would be complicated.

“[Karen and Alec] have a deliciously flawed [relationship]. Vivian was what made them work. Karen and Alex had an animal attraction, but the spiritual connection was definitely fostered by Vivian. But now they’re going to be inextricably linked by a baby. How are they going to deal with that? That’ll be a great opportunity for some storytelling.”

In addition to Jennifer’s exit, fans will also not see Jason George next season. He has committed to Grey’s Anatomy full-time.
