Big Brother 17 will crown its $500,000 winner Wednesday night. And although Vanessa Rousso, Steve Moses, and Liz Nolan are the only possible contenders for the big prize, all 17 players have the chance to win America’s Favorite Houseguest. Voting closed on the CBS website Monday night, and although even the first evicted houseguest could, in theory, win, in reality there are only a couple of frontrunners.
CBS does not have an official popularity poll, but fan sites have been keeping track of fan favorites since the season began. Two houseguests, John McGuire, otherwise known as “Johnny Mac,” and James Huling are the clear frontrunners.
Big Brother Network put McGuire on top for its final weekly poll, at 53.3 percent. James was a distant second at 31.1 percent. Vanessa was not even close at 3.6 percent, but still got third place. Steve was fourth and Liz seventh. The site noted that John has been at the top of the poll since Week 3 of the game.
Over on Jokers Updates, where there is a daily poll of ratings submitted by site members, James is on top. He’s held first place at least since day 84, and day 100 will be the last day of Big Brother 17. On that poll, John McGuire is in second place, followed by Meg Maley. On day 99, Steve was eighth, Vanessa ninth, and Liz 16th.
Fans voted online on the CBS website from September 15 to 21 for their favorite houseguest, up to 20 votes per day. The winner of America’s Favorite Houseguest gets $25,000. If finale night is similar to years past, the favorite houseguest will be announced at the very end of the program, after the $500,000 winner has already been crowned and exited the Big Brother house.
Past America’s Favorite Players have included Jeff Schroeder, Britney Haynes, Elissa Slater, and Donny Thompson.
Both James and John have their fans. On the television website CarterMatt, Huling was described as a popular player among fans.
“He played the game really aggressively when he was in power, and he was a lot of fun to watch on the live feeds.”
Meanwhile TV Guide writer Joyce Eng offered up “26 Reasons Why Johnny Mac Was the Best ‘Big Brother 17’ Houseguest.” In a Vine-laden post, Eng cited McGuire’s laugh, his take the on the twins, and the fact that he spelled “boogers” in a nose-themed veto competition.
John also has the distinction of being evicted twice this season. He won re-entry into the house in a competition with other members of the jury, only moments after he was first voted out. Another indication of his fan popularity was the loud volume of audience applause both times McGuire was evicted.
Big Brother 17 wraps up Wednesday, September 23rd at 9:30pm on CBS.
UPDATE: On Wednesday night’s finale James Huling was named America’s Favorite Houseguest.
