Krysten Ritter Plays Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’ — The Superhero That Isn’t

Krysten Ritter is already making waves as the heroine of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and the series won’t premiere until far into November and much of the attention the actress is getting for her new role is due to the character’s non-superhero status. Technically, she is a superhero, but she’s not flashy and she’s more flawed than most heroes.

The Marvel character presented in the series will not have a secret identity, a hidden lair, or a cool decoder ring. She does wear a pretty bada** leather jacket though. She drinks, too. Apparently, Jessica Jones can hold her liquor better than Superman.

Ritter’s character was once the full-fledged superhero with all of the bells and whistles one would expect, according to E! News, but that life was ended by a tragedy. There’s no word on what that tragedy is, though that may be revealed in the series premiere, and we only know that Jones is rebuilding her life in present day New York City.

“We’re not Daredevil. We don’t have a costume with a mask,” showrunner Melissa Rosenberg said. “We have a very talented actress, Krysten Ritter, and it’s her face all the time. Our reality is extremely grounded. If you read the Alias comic books, it’s Jessica Jones on the toilet with her pants around her ankles.”

Krysten plays a character who lacks the finesse and restraint of many of Marvel’s other superheroes as well.

“Jessica Jones did not train in martial arts; she’s a street brawler. If you piss her off, boom, she kicks you…She doesn’t fly but she can jump many stories, and she lands really badly, which is why she doesn’t do it too often. And the less you see it, the more believable it is. There will be flights in every episode and they’ll get bigger and bigger and bigger but that’s not my priority. That’s not the nature of the story. This show is more character driven than anything like a scene in that universe.”

Interestingly, it has just been announced that Ritter will join The Defenders as Jessica Jones and the listing for the planned series will team the character with other Marvel superheroes.

“Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist team up to fight crime in New York City.”

Variety explains that Marvel’s Daredevil, which completed a successful first season, will return and be joined by Marvel’s Luke Cage and Marvel’s Iron Fist. Together, the four series will come together in The Defenders.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter, will premiere on Friday, November 20, on Netflix.
