Lance Bass Says Caitlyn Jenner ‘Needs Time’ On Gay Marriage

Caitlyn Jenner caused a bit of a stir during her appearance on Ellen Tuesday. The former spouse of Kris Jenner and current star of the reality series I Am Cait told Ellen Degeneres she wasn’t always in favor of gay marriage. Jenner said her views have changed, but the talk show host questioned whether the former Olympian was really on board with the issue.

Lance Bass, who recently married his husband, Michael Turchin, told Meredith Vieira Jenner’s ambivalence is okay with him. He questioned whether Jenner is really a “traditionalist,” as she claims, but also allows for the athlete’s personal evolution.

“What I don’t get is, she’s sitting there in Givenchy, full makeup saying, ‘I’m a traditionalist.’ I’m like ‘What?!’

But I do have to give her some room, too, because even when I came out, I still caught myself saying, ‘Oh, she’s so hot.’ Like doing that thing you trained yourself to do for so many years. So I think we should give her a little room to grow.”

Bass, former member of the boy band ‘NSYNC, came out publicly as gay in 2006.

As E! Online reported, Jenner said when the issue of gay marriage first arose two decades ago, she was against it because she is a “traditionalist,” but she said her views have evolved.

“As time goes on, like a lot of people on this issue I’ve really changed thinking here, to I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness. That’s not my job. Ok. If that word marriage is really, really that important to you I can go with it.

It’s going to be pretty much the law of the land. So I still feel like yea, I’m ok with it. I don’t want to stand in front of somebody’s happiness.”

Ellen Degeneres told Howard Stern she found Jenner’s gay marriage views “confusing,” as Entertainment Weekly reported.

“I said, ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you – this is like, really confusing to people. And you still have a judgement about gay people and marriage.’ “

Noting that Jenner did not dance on her program, like many guests do, Degeneres gave a possible reason why.

“I don’t think she’s a dancer. Maybe she didn’t want to dance with me because I’m a lesbian.”

The Wrap reported that Jenner’s series, I Am Cait, pulled in high ratings for its debut episode but then dropped significantly for later installments. The season finale airs Sunday night on E!.
