After England exited the World Cup in March in ignominious fashion with a collapse to Bangladesh in the group stage, and Australia went on to win the whole competition, if Captain Eoin Margan’s men could win even a single match in the series against Australia it would be marked down as a moral victory.
After the first two thumping defeats to Australia, the hosts appeared simply overmatched. But they rallied for a ringing 93-run victory in the third ODI and then on Friday staged only the fourth successful run chase of 300 or more in the entire history of England one day international cricket.
Led by Morgan’s own 92 off 92 balls, England reached the target of exactly 300 with 10 balls to spare. All-rounder David Willey closed out the win with a massive six, with England needing just two to win.
If England can take the victory on Sunday, they will have staged a clean sweep of Australia on what has been a lengthy and grueling tour for the visitors. The first Ashes Test match started on July 8.
After retaking the Ashes with a 3-2 Test series victory, England beat Australia again in the tour’s lone T20 match, and now stands on the verge of a comeback victory in the climactic ODI series as well.
