Ellen DeGeneres, Caitlyn Jenner Gay Marriage Clash: Ellen Jokes That Split Rumors Show Tabloids Care About Lesbians

Ellen DeGeneres interviewed Caitlyn Jenner on her talk show and uncovered some surprises about her views. The usually unflappable Ellen was chatting about various issues when she touched on gay marriage, reported E! News.

DeGeneres asked Caitlyn to elaborate on why Jenner said she previously was not for gay marriage. Although Ellen asked for more details and listened carefully as the I Am Cait transgender reality TV star discussed her views, DeGeneres expressed concern about Caitlyn later on The Howard Stern Show.

“[Jenner] still has a judgment about gay marriage,” pointed out Ellen.

DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi have been married since 2008. And the talk show host clarified that when it comes to Caitlyn’s new transgender lifestyle, she wishes happiness for Jenner despite clashing over her views on same-sex marriage.

Ellen also dished on the reports that she and Portia are having marital problems. Not true, said DeGeneres. However, they’ve decided to take the approach that at least the tabloids care enough to cover them, even if it’s erroneous.

“Because for a while we thought nobody cared about us,” explained Ellen. “And we thought, oh, lesbians aren’t worthy of tabloid stories, so now we’re kind of flattered that they even care about us.”

As for the rumors, DeGeneres theorizes that because there are no problems in their marriage, it’s not worth printing the truth.

“We are madly in love, and I guess it’s boring,” added Ellen.

DeGeneres did, however, emphasize to Howard that she feels Caitlyn doesn’t fully understand why marriage is so important, and that she told Jenner it’s perplexing, reported the New York Daily News.

“I said, ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you. This is like, really confusing to people. And you still have a judgment about gay people and marriage.’ She goes, ‘Well if the word marriage is that important.'”

Ellen emphasized that she feel it is that important.

“It is, because that’s the word,” added DeGeneres.

However, Lance Bass feels that Caitlyn needs time, reported People.

Addressing Jenner’s views on gay marriage, Lance first joked about her appearance.

“What I don’t get is she’s sitting there in Givenchy, full makeup, saying, ‘I’m a traditionalist.’ I’m like, ‘What?'” said the 36-year-old. “I have to give her some room, too, because I mean, even when I came out, I still caught myself saying, ‘Oh, she’s so hot,’ like doing that thing that you trained yourself to do for so many years, so I think we should give her a little room to grow.”

Bass and his husband, Michael Turchin, are the first gay couple to get married on TV in the United States.
