‘Destiny’ Was Supposed To Have A Sequel This Month, Reports State

For fans eagerly awaiting Destiny to finish updating to its 2.0 update, as reported earlier via the Inquisitr, it may interest fans of the series to know that this month Bungie and Activision were originally planning on releasing a true sequel to Destiny.

According to a report on VideoGamer, documents that arose via the court battle between Destiny developer Bungie and the game’s composer, Marty O’Donnell, showed that the original release for Destiny in 2013 with its first sequel to be released September 30, 2015. However, we know this to not be the case as Destiny didn’t ship until September, 2014, with IGN reporting the delay due to substantial story revisions being the cause.

The sequel, as well as subsequent sequels, were planned for a release every other year, culminating in the release of Destiny’s “largest downloadable product” in 2020. How the changes to Destiny’s release plan will affect sequels from being released is unclear, but what is clear is that the sweeping changes made to Destiny pre-release have had major effects on how the game has progressed. With Destiny 2.0 releasing today, as well as The Taken King expansion next week, fans will still have many changes and adventures to sift and play through, but one can’t help but wonder how the game would be if the story changes hadn’t altered the release timeline.

The extra time to develop what would be Destiny 2 is a welcome prospect for players who have ventured their Guardians throughout the solar system, and the Destiny developer has stated previously they are hard at work on both future expansion packs (such as “The Taken King”) as well as their next “full-release product,” though Activision nor Bungie have yet to formally reveal or announce a sequel to Destiny.

In an earlier report by the Inquisitr, Destiny 2.0 brings many changes to the game, including a new leveling system and nerfs to character classes and equipment. Bungie is getting players ready for Destiny: The Taken King, which releases on September 15 to players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A lot of the changes with Destiny 2.0, however, don’t require players to own the expansions currently out, such as the level cap bump to 34, though if you want to take advantage of Destiny’s level cap of 40, you will need to own “The Taken King.” Full details can be found here.
