The Witch premiered to audiences at the Sundance Film Festival with some positive reviews as well as scaring a great deal of the audience. Since then, horror movie fans haven’t heard much more about this indie movie. However, we now have the first movie trailer for The Witch.
But, first, here’s the synopsis for The Witch to whet your appetite.
“New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. The Witch is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil.”
The Witch is directed and written by Robert Eggers and stars a couple of Game of Thrones actors. Kate Dickie (who played Lysa Arryn in HBO’s Game of Thrones) and Ralph Ineson (Dagmer Cleftjaw in Game of Thrones) star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Julian Richings. The Witch will be the first feature-length directorial debut for Robert Eggers who has a swath of film shorts under his belt already, including The Tell-Tale Heart and Hansel and Gretel.
According to Cinema Blend, the colonial family central to the story in The Witch are forced off their plantation and chose a new plot of land next to a forest reported to be under the control of witches. With the release of the new trailer, get ready for milk turning into blood, goats, babies disappearing during a quick game of peek-a-boo and child possession. Also expect to see parents turn on their children too as the child possession really takes off. The following trailer is filled with scary moments, but, as Wired points out, you want to be particularly mindful of scary moments around the 0:29, 0:55, 1:24, 2:14 and 2:24 marks in the trailer.
The Witch could, potentially, be the break out movie for Anya Taylor-Joy who plays Thomasin, the child blamed for witchcraft in The Witch, and whose family turns on her even though she denies the allegation. Previously you might have recognized Anya Taylor-Joy as Cassandra in the TV series, Atlantis. Kate Dickie and Ralph Ineson play her parents.
