Zooey Deschanel To Play Loretta Lynn In ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ On Broadway

Zooey Deschanel is heading to Broadway. The quirky star of “The New Girl” will be playing country legend Loretta Lynn in “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Lynn, who performed this week at the Ryman Auditorium during the Opry Country Classics in Nashville, invited Deschanel out on stage for a duet of “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” After singing a few tunes, the country singer released a statement announcing that Zooey would be playing her in the new Broadway play.

Lynn said:

“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I’d see ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see… I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great – she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”

Deschanel is best known for her acting but she also has a successful music career with the group She & Him. Do you think she’ll be good in the new Broadway play?

Reuters reports that Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her performance as Loretta Lynn in “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” movie.

MTV reports that the song was a #1 hit for Loretta Lynn in 1970. It was also the title of her best-selling autobiography in 1976 and was made into a movie in 1980. Here’s the synopsis from IMDB:

“At only thirteen years of age, Loretta Webb marries Doolittle Lynn and is soon responsible for a sizeable family. Loretta appears destined to a life of homemaking, but Doolittle recognizes his wife’s musical talent, and buys her a guitar as an anniversary present one year. This gift sets Loretta Lynn on the grueling, tumultuous path to country music greatness.”
