Michele Bachmann To Ditch Swiss Citizenship, Just So We Don’t Think She Hates America

Michele Bachmann made headlines last week when it was discovered that her husband was granted Swiss Citizenship, thereby granting Michele the same citizenship under Swiss law. Now Bachmann has announced that she plans to renounce her dual-citizenship.

So why the renunciation of her Swiss citizenship? Bachmann tells Minnesota Public Radio:

“Today I sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate requesting withdrawal of my dual Swiss citizenship, which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978. I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen. I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known.”

Apparently the story isn’t just a distraction for Bachmann, her DFL challenger Jim Graves of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party called her Swiss citizenship story a “distraction.” In what I would describe as a funny and obvious jab against Bachmann Graves was also sure to announce that he and his family were also “proud to be Americans.”

In the meantime Michele Bachmann’s children and her husband sought dual-citizenship and are happy to have that classification.

If Michele Bachmann is renouncing the citizenship to prove she is “proud to be an American” does that mean her family isn’t as proud since they requested their Swiss citizenship?
