‘Penny Dreadful’ Plans For A Dark Romance And The Addition Of A New Literary Character

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Penny Dreadful.

With the season finale of Penny Dreadful so fresh in the minds of fans, it has been difficult to glean new teases of the upcoming third season, other than the the fact that Penny Dreadful will, in fact, be back for a third go-around. Nonetheless, Penny Dreadful creator and showrunner John Logan has revealed that he will be bringing in a new character, timely enough to step in following the demise of poor Sembene (Danny Sapani)

According to Penny Dreadful‘s Logan, the new character will again be derived from classic gothic fiction and this time Penny Dreadful will welcome a character straight from the imagination of Robert Louis Stevenson and his book, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

“I can tell you this,” shared Logan, “and this is such a tease, and I am sorry for it – but after two years I am finally adding another famous literary character. It’s been fun going into another writer’s brain and bringing one of those great characters back into our world.”

Currently, it is still unconfirmed that the addition will be the notorious Dr. Jekyll and his monstrous alter ego Mr. Hyde, but there is so much consensus on the idea that it seems likely to be true.

Speaking of Penny Dreadful‘s dark and tormented characters, it seemsc two of the show’s protagonists will find love, at least for a time. The Penny Dreadful exec revealed that it may be time for Miss Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) to find comfort in each other’s arms, in spite of how the season finale seemingly left things.

“They’re fascinating characters for me, and they’re both in a very dark and desolate place and have been for a long time,” Logan said of the two Penny Dreadful characters.

John Logan says that the chemistry between Ms. Green and Mr. Hartnett also plays a big part in deciding to explore a love affair between their Penny Dreadful characters.

“The idea of two characters in need coming together and trying to find some grace or some lightness in the various curses that surround them was obviously very interesting,” added the Penny Dreadful showrunner. “Plus Eva and Josh are just very good together. They play very well together; they spark very well together.”

Currently, there is no word on a season premiere date for Penny Dreadful.
