Debra Messing Opens Up About Divorce

Debra Messing has had a few interesting months of art imitating life, and in this month’s issue of Ladies’ Home Journal magazine she opens up about the much criticized relationship between her and her Smash co-star Will Chase.

In December Debra Messing, 47, broke the news to the public that after 10 years of marriage she was ending her marriage with Daniel Zelman. Immediately following that news reports started to come out about Messing dating her Smash co-star Will Chase, who at the time was also going through his own divorce.

On the show the two participate in an extramarital affair, cheating on their spouses with each other. The fact that art was imitating life wasn’t lost on Messing in the least. “I’m trying to keep things as simple as possible – embracing saying ‘no’ and being okay with people being unhappy with me,” said Messing.

Debra went on to say that she feels at peace with the length of her marriage, admitting to the magazine that, “I am at peace with the journey we’ve had. I feel like the 20 years we had together has been a huge success. And despite the fact that everything is changing, I think everyone is thriving.”

Messing and Zelman have an 8 year-old son, Roman, who remains Messing’s number one priority in life, telling the magazine that the choices she make are solely with Roman in mind, “Every thought is dictated by what’s best for our son. We are completely on the same page in that regard. We are dear friends.”

However, Debra Messing does admit that her relationship’s end does change the way she feels about long term relationships in general saying, “I think the idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we’re living to 100. A hundred years ago people were dying at age 37. ‘Til death do us part was a much different deal.”

Do you think that Debra Messing has the right idea about partnerships?
