‘Heroes Reborn’ Trailer Debuts: ‘Chuck’ Star Zachary Levi To Play Anti-Hero Vigilante [Video]

The Heroes Reborn official trailer debuted to San Diego Comic-Con attendees on Sunday per NBC, featuring Chuck star Zachary Levi as the vigilante character Luke. Bearded and troubled, Luke promises to be quite a different role for Levi than the irrepressible and unwitting spy character Chuck Bartowski.

Zachary Levi told Entertainment Weekly that he reached out to NBC, wanting to be a part of Heroes and, in particular, to play a role that was “darker and grittier and heavier” than the archetype of the good guy spy. From all the gun holding in character photos and the dark footage in the trailer debut, it looks like Levi got his wish

“[Heroes Reborn] has a really unique dynamic kind of arc to the character and the journey that he’s on,” said Zachary.

The 13-episode miniseries will pick up after Heroes Season 4. As the trailer begins, returning heroes, now known as Evos, or “Evolved Humans,” are hunted a year after people with abilities are blamed for a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas, home of that endangered cheerleader.

The popular mantra, “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” was the impetus that compelled many of the original Heroes characters with hidden abilities to rise from ordinary lives and cross paths. The words were originally spoken by character Hiro Nakamura, then widely by characters throughout Heroes Season 1.

Sadly, the cheerleader won’t be returning, as previously reported by the Inquisitr. Neither will Silar, or Peter, or quite a few of the original power team.

Returning Heroes characters include Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg), Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis), Micah Sanders (Noah Gray-Cabey), and Jack Coleman (Noah Bennett).

For the upcoming Heroes Reborn, Zachary Levi joins the cast along with Joanne Judith Shekoni, Henry Zebrowski, Robbie Kay, Gatlin Green, Danika Yarosh, Kiki Sukezane, Ryan Guzman, Francesca Eastwood, and Rya Kihlstedt. Creator Tim Kring is on board, according to Heroes Wiki.

The 13 episodes of Heroes Reborn will be presented as a miniseries, not a series. This was intentional in order to keep the power and hype in balance and ground the success of the miniseries, which is darker than the original series, according to Zachary.

“There are a lot of Chuck fans who were Heroes fans,” continued Levi to Entertainment Weekly. “I just like making stuff that people dig. I really believe that entertainment is for the audience. It’s not for you. You shouldn’t feel fulfilled at work. At the end of the day, I think we should all be focusing on doing right by the fans. If you do that, then you make an excellent product. So I’m hoping that this speaks to and resonates with my fan base and specifically with the original Heroes fan base. I want them to feel like they got more, they got a new chapter of something that they really loved and it kind of made its way back to its roots.”

Digital prequel series Dark Matters will be made available to Apple users with the new Heroes Reborn App.
