San Antonio Spurs Trade Rumors: Ray McCallum Acquired From Sacramento Kings In Surprise Spurs Trade

San Antonio Spurs trade rumors reveal a surprising deal on Thursday (July 9). The Spurs traded for Ray McCallum of the Sacramento Kings, adding some additional depth to the roster for the 2015-16 NBA season. A report from ESPN.com states that the Spurs will give up a future second-round draft pick to acquire McCallum.

While this will certainly be considered a minor deal compared to the signing of LaMarcus Aldridge this offseason, acquiring McCallum could still be a big deal for the Spurs. He could wind up leading the second unit as one of the backup point guards (along with Patty Mills), with minutes likely coming if he proves he can contribute. It’s also a bit surprising that the Kings would just give up on him so quickly.

Ray McCallum was a second-round pick of the 2013 NBA Draft (36th overall), playing 113 games (40 starts) with the Kings since then. He averaged 20.6 minutes, 6.9 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.3 rebounds a game over those two years. McCallum’s shooting percentages are 41.4 from the field, 32.9 from three-point range, and 70.1 from the free throw line at this point of his career.

These San Antonio Spurs trade rumors show that the team is still trying to add depth and that it isn’t too afraid of going deeper into the luxury tax penalty. McCallum will make about $1 million for the 2015-16 NBA season, so on his own he isn’t that expensive, but it adds to an expensive offseason for the team. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, LaMarcus Aldridge was given a four-year, $80 million deal from the team, and Kawhi Leonard was reportedly given $90 million for the next five NBA seasons.

When it comes to the teams coming out of the Western Conference, it is very clear that the Spurs and LA Clippers are the favorites to win a title. Adding Aldridge, David West, and Ray McCallum is a pretty good offseason for the Spurs, helping the team keep pace with a Clippers team that added Paul Pierce to the starting rotation. The Clippers also found a way to hold on to DeAndre Jordan in free agency, keeping him alongside Blake Griffin and Chris Paul for the next few years.

Adding a player that provides some more youth and energy off the bench makes these very positive San Antonio Spurs trade rumors for the team. Ray McCallum will be just 24-years-old at the beginning of the 2015-16 NBA season, and could get a contract extension if it works out well.
