Marvel announced new casting news for the second season of Daredevil on Netflix. An old flame of Matt Murdock will return, and she just so happens to be the dangerous assassin Elektra too. Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe Retaliation, District 13: Ultimatum) joins what is shaping up to be an expanded cast of “frenemies” from the comics.
Elektra was obliquely mentioned in Episode 10 from the first season of Marvel’s Daredevil. The flashback episode mentions a beautiful Greek girl that Matt took Spanish to impress. Things didn’t work out between the two, but this potentially sets the stage for a recreation of one scene from John Romita’s The Man Without Fear miniseries.
Elodie Yung is a smart pick for Elektra as she already has proven her martial arts skills as Jinx in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Yes, that movie is of questionable quality, but Yung showed she has the moves of a ninja. The actress is also of French and Cambodian descent to help give her the exotic looks that the role of Elektra calls for.
“After a worldwide search, we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity,” said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.”
Yung’s Elektra will join Jon Bernthal’s Punisher as a potential adversary slash friend for Season 2 of Daredevil. Both characters have a history of being at odds and working with the blind superhero. The former is because she is a sai-wielding ninja assassin and mercenary. The latter is because he is an anti-hero who has no qualms about killing as many bad guys with guns as he can. It has all the settings of a love triangle from hell.
Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple character has also been confirmed to return the next season of Daredevil along with Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page).
Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2 will premiere on Netflix in 2016. The show just started shooting this week as images from the East Harlem set of Matt and Foggy together leaked on Twitter from Shelly Kay Photography.
