After giving birth to twins last year, Mariah Carey showed off her post-baby body in the May issue of Shape magazine, but she admits that getting her figure back was far from easy.
“Pregnancy was probably the best and the hardest thing I’ll ever go through,” Carey told Shape. “I know for a lot of women, it can be wonderful and relatively easy. But for me, it was like ‘Okay, honey, do you have to do everything the hard way?'”
The 43-year-old singing superstar says that she used to be able to shed pounds by amping her exercise routine, but Carey’s post-baby weight loss didn’t come quite so easily this time around.
“I used to be able to slim down just by exercising more, but that’s changed. Since having the babies, I realize that 90 percent of losing weight is my diet,” she explained.
That being said, Mariah added that she still sticks to a workout regimen. Rather than going at it intensely, Carey instead opted to focus on consistency combined with dietary changes to pull off her post-baby weight loss.
“Today my workout routine is more about getting and staying toned. And for me, that means either taking hour-long walks a few times a week or jumping in the pool three or four days a week to do 45 minutes of aquatic exercises,” she explained.
