Willie Nelson Monument To Be Unveiled At 4:20 In Austin

Capital Area Statues will be unveiling a Willie Nelson monument later today in Austin, Texas. The organizers said that they had no idea about the significance of the day, 4/20, or the significance of the time, 4:20, when the statue will be unveiled. Outspoken marijuana activist Wille Nelson, however, probably had a faint idea about “weed day.”

Lawrence Wright, one of the founders of Capital Area Statues, told the Canadian Press with a laugh:

“We didn’t know anything about it; it seems everyone else knew the story on this.”

Nelson, on the other hand, is a big aficionado of cannabis products. The legendary country singer even teamed up with Snoop Dogg to release a special version of “Roll Me Up” for 4/20. (You can listen to the song embedded below.)

NOLA.com reports that the privately funded monument will be unveiled today near the Moody Theater. Philadelphia sculptor Clete Shields said that the Willie Nelson monument features the singer in a relaxed standing pose with his guitar at his side.

Shields said:

“We wanted to get a timeless Willie, an ageless Willie.”

Nelson has won 10 Grammy awards and has sold more than 40 million albums. The country singer will be playing a show at the Moody Theater after his monument is unveiled and there’s a good chance that “Roll Me Up” is part of his set list.

Here’s a video of Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson, and Jamey Johnson singing “Roll Me Up.”
