The music of Guardians of the Galaxy was just as important to the James Gunn directed Marvel film as the characters and setting. So, it should be no surprise that the sequel will get a similar music feel starting with the title that borrows from the Awesome Mix. Guardians of the Galaxy 2? No. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Yes.
“Yes, the official title of the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Gunn wrote on his Facebook page.
“Kevin Feige recently let the title slip while doing Ant-Man press,” the director explained. “Which I’m really happy about because God knows I’ve let more than one thing slip accidentally while chattering away on this [Facebook] page.

Naturally, the title for the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is a nod to the tapes given to Peter Quill by his mother. The Awesome Mix Vol. 2 will undoubtedly play just as big a role in the next film as the Vol. 1 did in the first. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently expected to hit theaters on May 5, 2017. The first draft of script for the film is already done, and now Gunn and the rest of the creative team has begun the process of reworking it and tightening it into something that can be filmed. Details are understandably scarce, but the director did tell Variety a little about where the plot will take at least Star Lord and Gamora. “I think it’s a more emotional movie. It’s both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some of the characters,” he said. “We get to learn a lot about fathers in the second movie… We haven’t listened to ‘Awesome Mix 2,’ yet, so we get to hear it in the sequel.”

The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy clearly set the stage for the sequel to deal with Quill’s father. Thanos, Gamora’s adoptive father, will likely play a large role as well since it leads straight into Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 due out in May of the following year.
