‘Game Of Thrones’ Predictions: Could Tyrion Lannister Take The Iron Throne?

This is a magical time of year for Game of Thrones fans. The space between seasons is the one time when anything seems possible, when even the most outlandish fan theories and the most subtle of clues can have a deeper meaning for the episodes ahead.

[Warning: spoilers for Season 5 are ahead, in case you haven’t seen it yet.]

Some theories have apparently been rejected, but that hasn’t stopped fans from grasping at the last straws of hope. David Benioff and Dan Weiss have sworn that Jon Snow is dead and Kit Harrington won’t appear in Game of Thrones Season 6, but probably the last person they expected to question them is Daenerys Targaryen. As previously reported by the Inqusitr, Emilia Clarke revealed in a recent interview that she thinks there is a 50/50 chance that Jon Snow could come back.

“There are some helpful people there who could bring him back to life,” Clarke notes. While 50/50 odds of Jon Snow being dead aren’t great, that’s better than the 100 percent-against odds that the Game of Thrones show runners have given fans so far.

Perhaps the strangest theory concerns Game of Thrones fan favorite Tyrion Lannister. iDigitalTimes dropped a massive theory on the Game of Thrones fan community about Tyrion Lannister and his connection to the Targaryen family.

Fans may remember that in Season 3, Tywin Lannister told Tyrion that he had no way of proving that Tyrion wasn’t his son. At the time, it seemed like bitter grapes from a man constantly embarrassed by his youngest son’s behavior and deformities, but could there have been more to it?

The theory rests on the strange behavior of Aerys Targaryen around Joanna Lannister, Tyrion’s mother. The theory, which is common enough to be featured on fan page Westeros.org, is that the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen, raped or seduced Joanna Lannister, which lead to the conception and birth of Tyrion Lannister.

If iDigitial Times‘ theory is correct, then the “three-headed dragon” from Daenerys’ vision may finally be identified. The first head would obviously be Daenerys, the last officially recognized member of House Targaryen. The second head would presumably be Jon Snow, long suspected to be the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. If the theory proves true, then the third head would be Tyrion Lannister.

There are several questions that poke holes in the theory. The biggest question is what would George R. R. Martin gain by making Tyrion a Targaryen. Yet, there are some things that support it. In A Song of Ice and Fire, Tyrion is described as having pale blond hair, rather than the golden blond hair of his siblings, niece, and nephews. Tyrion also has an intense interest in dragons.

Then again, this is Game of Thrones. Tyrion Lannister on the Iron Throne is just too warm and fuzzy for this notoriously brutal series.

Winter may be a time of hardship for the citizens of Westeros, but for Game of Thrones fans, it’s a time of wild speculation. Expect some of the more wild theories to be laid aside as production on Game of Thrones Season 6 begins in July. Expect many theories to be laid aside entirely when Game of Thrones returns in April, 2016.
