‘The X-Files’ Paints A Grim Picture For Fox Mulder

Production has begun on The X-Files revival series; most of the key players are back on the set and new publicity shots are beginning to paint a fairly accurate picture of what fans of The X-Files can expect from this revival. The first — and most obvious — clues come from The X-Files’ central figures, and those images have already begun to prompt questions from concerned fans.

Gillian Anderson admits that returning to her Dana Scully role has not been as successful as she might have hoped. It seems fans of The X-Files are as disappointed as Ms. Anderson herself, as set photos reveal that Gillian has had to don a wig to return to Scully’s trademark red locks. Ms. Anderson has dyed her hair enough times since the original run of The X-Files ended that another dye job would risk hair loss for the actress.

“There’s a big dialogue about my f–king hair,” The X-Files star said. “I appreciate their enthusiasm, but goodness me!” Ms. Anderson revealed that wearing the wig hasn’t been without sacrifice. “So yeah, unfortunately, it is a wig. I mean, every day, I have a whopping headache. And so I’m paying for that decision. I want all the fans to know that I’m suffering for the red!” Speaking of suffering, David Duchovny revealed that Fox Mulder’s emotional state can be seen all too clearly in the dad jeans he will be seen wearing in the premiere episode of The X-Files revival.

“Mulder’s not in a great place,” Duchovny said. “He’s wearing bad jeans, so you can just extrapolate from my wardrobe. He’s in a dark, dark place.” Another shot selling the idea that Fox is in need of Dana Scully’s light to lead him back from the brink is the exterior image of a tiny shack of a house. If this is Mulder’s place, it seems reasonable to assume the years since The X-Files last aired have not been kind to Duchovny’s character.

Also contributing to the idea that The X-Files will open on a troubled and desolate Fox Mulder is the image of the title page from Chris Carter’s script. The title for that premiere episode of The X-Files revival is “My Struggle,” and, in conjunction with the image of Mulder sporting those jeans, it isn’t hard to guess what inspired that title.

This title may also have a double meaning in light of news that the premiere X-Files revival episode will deal with werewolves in some manner. Perhaps Mulder has become some breed of werewolf in the years since we last saw him. That would certainly explain his living in that shack in the wilderness.

The X-Files revival is scheduled for a January 24 premiere on FOX.
