As If: ‘Clueless’ Musical Might Be Coming To Broadway

Looks like Clueless might hit the Broadway stage. According to Entertainment Tonight, director Amy Heckerling spilled the news that Clueless, the musical, is in development.

According to Heckerling, it looks like Clueless is going to be a real “jukebox” musical, in the same vein as Green Day’s American Idiot. Heckerling revealed that she’s pretty far into the development process for the Clueless musical.

“I’ve written what they call the book, and it’s a jukebox musical.” If you remember, the Clueless soundtrack was filled with 90s jams from artists such as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Beastie Boys, Counting Crows, Coolio, and Smoking Popes. Seeing as the film had a lot of great tunes for its time, the possibilities seem endless. Some notable songs that we hope they get the rights to are “All By Myself” (remember when Cher has an epiphany right next to a shooting water fountain? Epic.) and “Rollin With the Homies.”

If you haven’t seen the movie Clueless, this is the synopsis.

“Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was — and falls for him.”

As of right now, the big holdup seems to be getting the casting right. Back when the 1995 film was released, the cast wasn’t popular or in the spotlight, but many of them, because of their roles in the film, shot to stardom, and have now made those roles, and countless others, iconic in the minds of 90s kids. That said, casting for Cher (Alicia Silverstone), Josh (Paul Rudd), Dionne (Stacey Dash), and Tai (the late Brittany Murphy) is a huge task.

“Everything goes so slowly. I go, wow, this takes a lot. I thought movies took a long time. It’s hard to know with Broadway when things will happen.”

Regardless, it seems like fans are really excited about Clueless the musical.

One Twitter user wrote: “SO ON BOARD! – A Clueless Musical Is in the Works and All Is Right With the World.”

Another wrote, “THERE IS A CLUELESS MUSICAL COMING OUT YESSS”

Another user celebrated the exciting news with the following tweet, “Clueless The Musical is happening!!! What a time to be alive.”

Although the casting might be difficult for the characters, we can easily see Megan Hilty taking the role of Cher. Who would you cast?
