Canada is making only its second trip to the single-elimination knockout round of the Women’s World Cup, a feat they accomplished despite scoring only two goals in their three group stage games.

Nonetheless, Canada won Group A, earning advancement with a record of one win and two draws. Switzerland, on the other hand, make their first-ever appearance in the knockout phase of the Women’s World Cup, despite winning only one game and losing the other two.

But Switzerland, who squeaked into the knockout round with a third-place finish in Group C, managed to score a whopping 11 goals in their three group stage games — 10 of them coming in the team’s lone win, a 10-1 crushing of Ecuador. With that win, Switzerland became just the second team in FIFA Women’s World Cup history to score at least 10 in a single game. Germany is the other.

Canada, ranked eighth in the world, enters the match heavily favored over 19th-ranked Switzerland. But Canada Coach John Herdman says he has spared no detail in preparing his squad for the critical match, even running down the correct way to stand as a team during a penalty shootout.

Canada and Switzerland have played only four matches against each other, all of them international friendlies. Canada won three of those matches while drawing the fourth. But coming into Sunday’s match, Canada has not defeated a European opponent in 10 straight matches.

In fact, Canada’s draw against the Netherlands on June 15 ended a streak of nine straight losses against European teams.
