Italy Sets New Record For World’s Largest Tiramisù [Video]

Chefs in Gemona, Italy, beat the previous Guinness World Record on Saturday by making the world’s largest Tiramisù dessert, and naturally it was absolutely delicious.

It reportedly took 200 people to make the tasty coffee-flavored delight, including 30 pastry chefs. The dessert weighed a massive 3,015 kilos (6,647 lbs), beating the previous record set back in March by more than 1,000 kilos (2,205 lbs). The massive dessert apparently consisted of 250 trays of Tiramisù. There’s probably none left now.

It all started as a competition among the local shopkeepers in Gemona and the creation of the world’s largest Tiramisù was sponsored by several local businesses, some of which are cake shops in the area. It turns out it was a popular event as almost 20,000 people were there when a crane was used to weigh the world’s largest Tiramisù.

Naturally, they weren’t just there to watch as everyone got stuck into the record breaking delightful dessert as soon as the weight (and record) had been confirmed by the Guinness World Records as being the world’s largest Tiramisù.

According to the Local, Conserva Vice President Mirko Ricci, who organized the event, told them that people said it was not only the biggest, but also the best Tiramisù they had ever tasted.

According to Ricci, it was after hearing of the previous record-breaking world’s largest Tiramisù set in 2014 in Piove di Sacco, in the Veneto region of Italy, that they were prompted to try and beat the record. However, it was only after they began making preparations that they found out the Guinness World Record had already been beaten in Bahrain.

“So we had to recalculate!”

No doubt Italy is thrilled to have the record back in their country for the world’s largest Tiramisù!

world's largest tiramisuFor those poor souls who have never experienced Tiramisù, it is a marvelous, creamy, coffee-flavored dessert which consists of ladyfingers soaked in coffee placed in layers with a rich mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, then topped with cocoa.

Sometimes the dessert is topped with nuts or fresh strawberries, as in the image on the right. Warning, this dessert is not for those hoping to lose any kind of weight!

According to the Local, the Italian restaurant that first created Tiramisù (the name of which means “pick me up,” probably relating to the generous amount of caffeine) had to close down last year after it was hit by the financial crisis. A sad day indeed, but at least the gorgeous dessert continues and Italy has now achieved a new record for the world’s largest Tiramisù ever created.
