Friday Release Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Is Like A Holiday For LGBT Community

On Friday, the long-awaited release of the third season of Orange is the New Black, which has been praised for its LGBT characters, arrives on Netflix. It is causing a lot of excitement in the general public, but the LGBT community appears to be the most anxious to watch the new season. The LGBT-oriented site Towleroad has added to the excitement.

“Lock yourself up for the weekend and join the ladies of Litchfield when season three of the beloved Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black drops Friday. Get caught up with Red (Kate Mulgrew), Piper (Taylor Schilling) and, our absolute favorite, Sophia (Laverne Cox) at your leisure as all the new episodes will be available at once.”

“Tomorrow is like a National holiday for me. I’ve already taken off the whole weekend for work so I can binge on every episode,” wrote commenter CGender4 after the article.

The excitement over the new series was the talk of the gay community on Twitter.

Laverne Cox, perhaps the most famous transgender actress that has ever lived, was interviewed this week by Entertainment Weekly. The magazine quotes her from a Tumblr post when talking about Caitlyn Jenner.

“This is why I’m so grateful that I had the luxury of transitioning in private… Because when you transition in the public eye, the transition becomes the story.”

Cox goes on to note that she is always disturbed when hearing conversations about trans people that focus on surgery. Cox certainly didn’t have to deal with that, but she has still been a huge topic of debate.

So far, the third season of Orange is the New Black has been getting good reviews. HitFix really likes the continued character development of Season 3 and the several flashback scenes — especially when the inmates remember Mother’s Day. Vanity Fair also talks about the character development of Orange.

“But Season 3 is far from just fun and games. Now that the series has settled some, there is ample opportunity for its characters to pause and reflect on their circumstances; the quieter things get, the louder regret and despair can start to hiss and whisper.”

Willa Paskin of Slate is one of the few critics who aren’t happy about what Orange is the New Black has turned into. She believes the show was much better when it was darker. She doesn’t like that it has turned into too much of a comedy.

The series will start at 3 a.m. EDT. That means that if you are on the West Coast, you can start watching the show at midnight. Are you excited about the new season of Orange is the New Black? Let us know in the comments section.
