New To Netflix: Jaden Smith Will Star In The New Baz Luhrmann Production ‘The Get Down’

It has just been announced Jaden Smith has joined the cast of Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down. Jaden Smith will star as Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling, a “psychedelically talented and enigmatic graffiti writer raised in the South Bronx” according to Deadline, who made the announcement in relation to Jaden Smith’s new role.

The Get Down will premiere on Netflix in 2016 and run for 13 episodes. It is described on IMDB as “a group of teenagers living in the South Bronx in the 1970s [who] make their way in the big city during the formative years of the hip hop scene.” Baz Luhrmann is probably best known for his theatrical style present in movies such as Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge. As is expected of a Baz Luhrmann production, The Get Down will be a musical and will also focus on the early graffiti scene. Luhrmann is already praising Jaden Smith for his dedication.

“He has begun developing his The Get Down skill set, even taking lessons from the legendary graffiti artist Lady Pink of ‘Wild Style’ fame, as well as steeping himself in the history and culture of the Bronx… Jaden has been seeking diverse and challenging roles and this is a testament to his passion to grow in the craft. We’re all very happy with the casting of Jaden in the role of ‘Dizzee’ Kipling, and with his addition, the Kipling family cast is now complete.”

Jaden Smith has had a long acting career — well, for his age anyway — having started out in the TV series All of Us. His first movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, followed not long after his stint on television. Although, in recent times, Jaden Smith has been known more for his dress sense than his acting ability when he wore a dress to the prom he went to with Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg.

According to Hollywood Life, The Get Down will also star Jimmy Smits, Herizen Guardiola, Justice Smith, Shameik Moor, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, and Mamoudou Athie. Alongside Jaden Smith, the Kipling family on The Get Down will also include Skylan Brooks and Tremaine Brown, Jr. Catherine Martin, Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, Stephen Adly Guirgis, and Marney Hochman are listed as executive producers alongside Baz Luhrmann.
