Sting At Tony Awards: The Last Ship Was ‘Personal’

The Tony Awards are tonight and Sting shared his thoughts about his Broadway musical, The Last Ship, which is up for two awards. Sting is nominated for Best Original Score and the show’s composer/arranger, Rob Mathes, is nominated for Best Orchestrations.

He had a chance to explain his personal attachment to the show.

“…it was about my hometown, about my community, the one I was brought up…brought up with. So it was a personal and compelling story to tell…” – Sting

Showing up at the Tony Awards with his wife, Trudie Styler, Sting is also one of the presenters for the evening.

Sting also felt that his nomination was “a big surprise.”

The Last Ship was “short-lived,” but received great reviews for its music, story line, and performances, including Sting himself.

Some believe the well-written score and story didn’t connect with ticket buyers on Broadway, accustomed to the bigger musical productions. The Last Ship opened on October 26, 2014 and closed on January 24, 2015 after 29 previews and 105 performances.

It was directed by Joe Mantello. Sting joined the cast midway to encourage ticket sales and promote the theatrical musical.

The former frontman for The Police has not lost any hope for his show. After great critical reviews, Sting has decided to continue performances.

Sting is taking his production to Scandinavia. It will play in Oslo in 2016 and then head to Stockholm and Helsinki in 2017.

The 2015 Tony Awards had a pre-show outside of Radio City Music Hal in New York City. The show begins at 8 p.m.

There are over 175 stars expected to celebrate the Tony Awards this year — Bradley Cooper, Neil Patrick Harris, Jim Parsons, Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Tisdale, Bryan Cranston, Joe Manganiello, Kiefer Sutherland, Anna Chlumsky, Larry David, Jason Alexander, Misty Copeland, Sting, Corey Stoll, David Hyde Pierce, Debra Messing, Jennifer Nettles, Marg Helgenberger, Rita Wilson, Rose Byrne, Thomas Sadoski, Sutton Foster, Taye Diggs, Taylor Schilling, Bobby Cannavale, Tommy Tune, and of course, Sting.

Will this be a lucky night for The Last Ship and Sting?
