The splashy awards show wraps up the biggest year in Broadway history, with a record 13.1 million theatergoers passing through turnstiles of at least one of the 40 theaters crammed into the storied Times Square area of Midtown Manhattan, the capital of American live theater, spending an all-time high of $1.37 billion to see the current crop of Broadway shows.
The 2015 Tony Awards ceremony, in addition to handing out the honor for the best shows and performances of the 2014/2015 Broadway season, boasts an extraordinary lineup of stars not only in the audience, but on stage as well.
A list of just a few of the 175 stars expected to appear at the Tony Awards includes — ready for this? — Bradley Cooper, Neil Patrick Harris, Jim Parsons, Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Tisdale, Bryan Cranston, Joe Manganiello, Kiefer Sutherland, Anna Chlumsky, Larry David, Jason Alexander, Misty Copeland, Sting, Corey Stoll, David Hyde Pierce, Debra Messing, Jennifer Nettles, Marg Helgenberger, Rita Wilson, Rose Byrne, Thomas Sadoski, Sutton Foster, Taye Diggs, Taylor Schilling, Bobby Cannavale, Tommy Tune and numerous others.
Among the must-see performances, Vanessa Hudgens and the cast of Gigi sing “The Night They Invented Champagne,” while Kelsey Grammar and Matthew Morrison give a rendition of “Stronger” from Finding Neverland.
Predictions? While Bradley Cooper won lavish praise for his performance in the lead role of a revived production of The Elephant Man, the Best Lead Actor in a Play award is widely expected to go to Broadway favorite Alex Sharp for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
The Best Actress in a Play award appears to be less of a contest, with Dame Helen Mirren expected to grab the statue for her role in The Audience, beating out Carey Mulligan for Skylight and Elizabeth “Mad Men” Moss, who starred in The Heidi Chronicles.
