Want To Start Reading Marvel Comics? Universe Getting Reboot This Fall That’s Perfect For Newbies

If you’re a newbie when it comes to the Marvel Comics universe, then this announcement is for you.

The Marvel universe is currently at a turning point in its storyline: the Secret Wars, which began in 2012 with Avengers vs. X-Men, and will continue and conclude this summer, Mashable reported. Once this pivotal event is over, Marvel Comics will introduce something fresh right on its heels.

It’s called The All-New All-Different Marvel, and will launch this fall with 60 No. 1 issues of its titles, picking up eight months after the Secret Wars, Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso told Entertainment Weekly.

“And nothing says ‘jumping point’ like the [No.] 1,” he said. “And all of them, I think, all are going to offer diverse, exciting and accessible entry points into our world. And there’ll be a lot of different flavors.”

The “massive universe transforming event” that is Secret Wars is the perfect clean slate, to the point that it “ends a chapter in Marvel (Comics).” And where there’s an end, there’s a beginning, though long-time fans won’t see the history erased or rewritten.

What better place for someone who has found herself fascinated by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., or loved Avengers: Age of Ultron, but isn’t quite up to snuff with the universe’s detailed history? No sweat, newbies, assured sales and marketing VP David Gabriel, USA Today reported.

“The real beauty of that is if you’re one of these fans who’ve been around for many years, it’s a great, exciting mystery. And if you’re these new fans who maybe only jumped in this year when you saw the Avengers movie, you’ll be able to pick up any of these comics and you will not need to know 50 years of backstory of anybody.”

So what, exactly, will be different in the new comics? There aren’t too many details yet, but what has been released about the reboot is tantalizing. One thing is certain — it’ll be much more diverse than ever before.

And we have some kick-butt female superheroes to thank for that, like Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel, the female Thor (who tripled the title’s sales), the ladies-only Avengers team, and the very popular Spider-Gwen.

Readers can expect Iron Man with different armor, a new Spider-Man, a big change to the Hulk that Alonso said is “certain to cause debate.” Characters from the movies, like the Vision, Steve Rogers, Agent Coulson, Ant-Man, and Black Panther will also get more attention in the comics. The female Thor and an African-American Captain America will also stick around.

A favorite from the 1970s will be rebooted for the 21st century — Red Wolf, Marvel Comics’ first Native American superhero. And completely new characters will have debuts in “core titles.”

“This is the Marvel Universe. (We are) inviting readers into a universe comprised of bold new landscapes populated with characters and teams both familiar and brand-new. This … honors our past 76 years, yet takes a bold step with daring, and accessible, entry points.”
