Seattle Mariners Trade Rumors: Mark Trumbo Trade Completed With Arizona Diamondbacks
Seattle Mariners trade rumors have finally led to something. The Mariners just traded for Mark Trumbo of the Arizona Diamondbacks, adding some additional power to a lineup that has struggled to score runs. A report from KTAR News in Arizona has the Mariners acquiring outfielder Mark Trumbo and pitcher Vidal Nuno. In exchange, the Diamondbacks acquire catcher Wellington Castillo, relief pitcher Dominic Leone, infielder Jack Reinheimer, and outfielder Gabby Guerrero.
Trumbo was in his second season with the Diamondbacks and didn’t live up to what the team wanted from him when it acquired him from the Los Angeles Angels. So far in 2015, Trumbo had appeared in 46 games, posting a.259 batting average (45-for-174). He had an OPS of.805 to his credit, helped by 22 extra base hits (nine home runs). Trumbo also had 23 runs scored and 23 RBIs, splitting time between right field and first base for the Diamondbacks.
The Mariners also acquired pitcher Vidal Nuno from the Diamondbacks in this deal. Nuno had pitched 14 1/3 innings, posting a 1.88 ERA, and 1.047 WHIP. He could be used in the starting rotation by the Mariners, especially if the team suffers any more injuries. As far as team control goes, Nuno hasn’t hit arbitration yet, meaning the Mariners could use him for a while if needed. As for Trumbo, he has one more arbitration year (2016) in his current deal, giving the Mariners some additional control.
As previously reported on the Inquisitr, Trumbo is a former All-Star in the American League, having had a lot of success for the Angels and against the Mariners. In the 2012 MLB season, he posted a .268 batting average with 32 home runs and 95 RBIs. In 2013, he had 34 home runs and 100 RBIs, showing that he could be a really good power hitter for the Mariners. The downside is that he strikes out a lot, but if he can keep the OPS above.800, then he will be a key acquisition for the Mariners.
The Mariners did lose some depth with this move, as Castillo was the backup catcher for Mike Zunino. The team will likely make a promotion from Triple-A Tacoma to fill that need, but it also means that someone else on the 25-man roster will have to be removed. That roster move has not yet been revealed, but could include removing a veteran that has been underperforming. The Seattle Mariners just pulled off a trade stating the intentions of the franchise to continue competing for an American League West title this season.
