New York Mets Destroyed By Detroit Tigers In Split-Squad Game

The New York Mets got a wake up call today, in the form of a 2-9 loss to the Detroit Tigers. In the sixth inning, James McCann hit a grand slam, which gave the Tigers four of their seven runs in that inning alone.

The only points racked up by the Mets came when Ike Davis hit a two-run homer. The Mets were in the lead 2-1 after four innings, because of Davis’s hit, but unfortunately it was not meant to be, because the Tigers came out on top in the split-squad game at Port St. Lucie, Florida.

As for injuries during the game, RA Dickey required two stitches in his right heel, courtesy of being spiked by Corey Jones, who stepped on him during the third inning. Dickey was covering first base when the accident happened.

The Mets two RBIs were the only two hits starter Thad Weber allowed, the second being a hit by Lucas Duda.

Following Spring Training in Port St. Lucie, the Mets have decided that Johan Santana will be their starting pitcher in the first game of the season. The Cy Young Award winner said of the pick that, “I’m happy to have the opportunity to start the season from Day One with the team. That’s something I was really looking forward to.”

New York Mets Manager Terry Collins said he is excited for Santana to play in the opening game. He related that, “He said to me in the winter, ‘I came to New York to be the opening day starter. If I can do it, I’ll be there.’ He’s ready to go.”

Santana is coming back from a shoulder surgery that took place in September 2010, and he says that he is ready to play. He has played in Spring Training games so far, and threw a few practice pitches in the bullpen Saturday.

While the New York Mets did not win the split-squad game today, they are hoping to win the rest of the regular season.
