Dropped iPhone Records Stunning Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea

A vacationer in Spain accidentally dropped his phone into the ocean recently, and astonishingly, the device managed to record its fall to the bottom of the sea before being recovered intact and still functioning.

The iPhone in question belongs to Gregory Papadin, who was vacationing with his brother in Menorca, Spain, when the unusual incident took place. As Buzzfeed notes, Papadin was using his phone to record when he dived off of a boat, entering the ocean. Just moments after jumping into the sea, an “accidental flick of the wrist” caused Papadin to drop the phone, beginning its minute-long plunge to the bottom.

Astonishingly, Papadin’s phone was still recording when it was dropped into the sea and was protected by a case (though it is unclear what brand or model). In an even luckier turn of events, the phone was dropped in such a manner that its camera was facing the surface as it tumbled through the water, recording its entire fall to the ocean floor.

Once the dropped phone settled on the seabed, it continued to record as Papadin and his brother swam overhead, and documented a few passing fish in the process, as the Huffington Post reports. The phone had been dropped in relatively shallow water, but despite repeated attempts by both Papadin brothers, it remained out of their reach due to the quick escalation in pressure that occurs as a person dives deeper beneath the waves. Luckily for the duo, the captain of the boat they were on had some experience with diving and was able to put it to use in retrieving the dropped phone.

“The underwater pressure was too much for both my brother and I to swim and get it, but the owner of the boat we rented was able to reduce the pressure using a special breathing method meant for diving (equalization),” Papadin’s video description noted. “He was able to retrieve it, and my phone managed to survive the whole ordeal!”

Recently, it has been rumored that Apple will be updating the next iPhone to include a 12-megapixel camera that includes a Sony sensor which will optimize it for low-light photography, as the Inquisitr previously reported. In Papadin’s case, however, the dropped iPhone 5’s camera proved to be more than sufficient in capturing stunning images as it fell to the bottom of the sea.
