Couple Welcomes 100th Grandchild

A couple welcomed their 100th grandchild to the family. Leo and Ruth Zanger from Quincy, Illinois have been married for 59 years. They have 12 children and 53 grandchildren. When you consider the 46 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, that adds up to be 100 grandchildren, according to the Daily Mail.

“This Illinois family has marked a significant milestone when it welcomed its 100th grandchild.”

The oldest child, Linda, is 58-years-old, and the youngest is Joe, who is 31-years-old. Joe was already an uncle to 10 nieces and nephews by the time he was born.

The other children include Debbie, Donna, David, Greg, Daniel, Mike, Steve, Chuck, Matt, and Ernie. The Zanger family has grouped the grandchildren, the great-grandchildren, and the great-great grandchild all together under the category of “grandchildren.” Even if the great-grandchildren and the one great-great-grandchildren were not included, 53 grandchildren is still a significant number.

Jaxton become the 100th grandchild when he was born on April 8. Actually, Jaxton became the 46th great-grandchild born to grandchild, Austin, and his wife, Ashleigh, who said she is extremely proud of being the mother of grandchild No. 100.

NBC reports that Leo and Ruth can count on any one of their children or grandchildren for special duties. For instance, Donna Lane, one of the Zanger daughters, is the family historian who keeps detailed records of births, weddings, telephone numbers, anniversaries, and just about anything else directly or indirectly connected with the Zanger family. She is the one who brought it to everybody’s attention that Jaxton is grandchild No. 100.

Many family members currently have, or at some point in the future, will work for the family real estate business, Zanger and Associates at 1200 Broadway.

Although the Zangers say they have plenty of excuses to get together, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day are extremely exciting with all the kids and adults. The Zangers rent out a church hall and buy multiple pounds of meat for every gathering. A family gathering usually consists of 50 pounds of ham or ten turkeys. The family has had a lot of help because everyone brings supplies and pitch in with the cooking.

“We’re all really close. We get together a lot. There’s always a lot of interaction. We spend a lot of time with each other. I know there are a lot of families half of our size who only get together maybe once or twice a year.”

Leo often brags about his family.

“The good Lord has just kept sending them. We could start our own town. For those who marry in to the family, it can be an adjustment, but a pleasant one.”
