Brittney Griner Ejected in Final Seconds of Baylor’s Win Over Tennessee [Video]

Baylor Women’s star center Brittney Griner, quickly becoming popular for her dunks on female opponents, put together another impressive performance on Monday night before being ejected in the closing seconds of her team’s 77-58 victory over Tennessee.

During the final minute of Baylor’s comfortable win which secured their spot in the NCAA Women’s Final Four, Odyssey Sims, who led the Bears with 27 points, tumbled to the floor with the Volunteer’s Shekinna Stricklen and the two had to be separated.

“I’m not that type of person. I don’t fight on the court, said Stricklen after the game. “I did trip, and it looked like I was trying to push her and she just took in the wrong way and we had a little talking back and forth. I’m actually cool with Odyssey.”

Sims similarly downplayed the incident, saying:

“Just got caught in the heat of the moment. Everything’s fine now.”

Though no punches were thrown, Griner – who finished the night with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 9 blocked shots – and two teammates (Jordan Madden and Terran Condrey) were ejected for leaving the bench area and coming onto the court.

After some initial concerns that Brittney’s ejection would include an automatic suspension for Baylor’s next game the NCAA has already indicated that no suspensions are forthcoming, which is good to hear considering the team is on the brink of perfect season.

Huffington Post writes that despite the unfortunate ending to the contest, cooler heads prevailed and the mood quickly changed once the final buzzer went off.

Baylor coach Kim Mulkey shared a tender moment with Pat Summitt, who may have coached her last game. The iconic coach of the Lady Vols revealed in August that she has been diagnosed with early onset dementia.
