Concept Art For ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Gives Fans Their First Look At Cyclops, Jean Grey Costumes

Fox is giving the First Class X-Men trilogy one more go, and new details are trickling out on just what fans can expect the X-Men to look like when X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters next year. The latest news: some new concept art has given fans a glimpse of how X-Men mainstays Cyclops and Jean Grey might look when they take the screen in 2016.

The new pics come by way of Empire Magazine [h/t: ComicBookMovie], which released concept art from the forthcoming Bryan Singer-helmed third installment of the successful X-Men: First Class trilogy. While previous news has given fans a look at concept art for Archangel, photos of Professor X actor James McAvoy getting his head shaved, and looks at the new cast, this newest bit is the barest look at the costumes that Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner might be wearing on screen as Cyclops and Jean Grey.

From the look of things, the two X-Men’s costumes appear to take some cues from the All New X-Men comic book series that Marvel launched in 2012. It’s difficult to say for certain, due to the tiny image, but there are some definite similarities between what’s been in the comics and what appears to be in this concept art shot.

At the very least, the costumes look to be different from the black leather look first introduced in the first X-Men trilogy.

Aside from giving a look at the costumes, the concept art might also give a sense of the tone that X-Men: Apocalypse will strike. There seems to be a great deal more destruction in this shot than has been the case in previous X-Men movies. Cyclops fires his optic blasts – perhaps at Apocalypse, perhaps at Archangel – from atop an overturned minibus, while Jean Grey takes cover behind some debris. All around them is a scene of urban destruction that appears devoid of any standing buildings.

That stands to reason, though: Oscar Isaac, who plays the titular Apocalypse, has already said that his character will bring the X-Men to their knees in X-Men: Apocalypse. If there’s any X-Men villain that would be likely to do just that, it’s Apocalypse, who has the potential to be the best villain the X-Men have faced on screen to date.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016, and the movie will bring to a close the most recent X-Men trilogy. Jennifer Lawrence has already signaled that her next turn as Mystique in X-Men: Apocalypse will be her last. Other mainstays from the First Class trilogy, such as Nicholas Hoult, have signaled that they will be moving on as well, though Magneto actor Michael Fassbender has said that he would love to continue playing that character.
