Red Nose Day Best Moments: Celeb Real Voices And Brit-Bashing

Red Nose Day: formerly known as May 21, 2015.

Red Nose Day has been huge in the UK and Australia for decades, and this year made its debut in the U.S. As the Telegraph pointed out, while Red Nose Day involved red noses being sold at Walgreens across the country and the Empire State building being lit up in a stunning crimson shade, the showstopper of the Comic Relief fundraiser was the three-hour television special aired on Thursday, May 21, 2015, and broadcast live from New York on NBC.

The television special was a who’s who of who’s hot across all areas of entertainment and music, and the show brought moment after moment. Here is our take on the absolute best moments from the inaugural U.S. Red Nose Day.

Celebrities’ Real Voices Revealed

We love it when celebrities put their reputations on the line and have some fun in the name of a good cause. In this sketch, Julia Roberts’ “real voice” is revealed, and various co-stars, including Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, and Hugh Bonneville, purportedly confirm that Julia Roberts’ real voice is deep and gravelly. As the Telegraph explains, the video goes on to reveal that Hugh Grant’s voice has also been re-dubbed in every movie he has ever made, going on to show that his real voice is nasal, high-pitched, and certainly not British.

Daniel Craig and Liam Neeson were also included in the fun, as the video reveals.

The Anti-Brit Movement

Red Nose Day is famously British, and the United States have been unusually slow to come to the party. Host Seth Meyers took advantage of this fact, engaging in continuous lighthearted Brit-bashing.

“This is an American show now, and I did not want the Brits doing anything in front of the camera, mostly because they are famously terrible actors. But they all turned out, so we are using them backstage.”

Rather than allow the British celebrities to appear on stage, the show’s organizers purportedly gave all British celebrities low profile roles behind the scenes.

        • Orlando Bloom running the soundboard
      • Simon Cowell directing
      • Naomi Campbell on Camera 2
      • Sir Ian McKellen working on the teleprompter
      • Eddie Redmayne being in charge of wishing people good luck
      • Benedict Cumberbatch marking up the cue cards
      • Dame Helen Mirren making cups of tea
      • Sienna Miller working as a chimney sweep (in a building with no chimneys)
      • Daniel Day Lewis cleaning the men’s room
      • Robert Pattinson valet parking (and joyriding in) cars

To explain the Brit-bashing in the inaugural U.S. Red Nose Day telecast, Seth Meyers’s explained that over $1 billion has been raised across Britain for Comic Relief in the past three decades.

“And you know that everyone in the UK will be sitting there in their castles, drinking tea, saying ‘It’ll be rubbish in America’s hands.'”

As Rolling Stone noted, Meyers went on to say that while the goal of Red Nose Day is to raise money for needy children, the real goal was something entirely different.

“[The goal of Red Nose Day is to] raise a pile of cash to shove in England’s stuck-up face.”

The Red Nose Day telecast raised $10 million, including a $4 million donation by Bill and Melinda Gates.
