Blanchett Misquoted: Cate Blanchett Backs Away From Bisexual Claims, Says She Was ‘Misquoted’

Cate Blanchett says she was misquoted recently when she was talking about her love life. According to The SpreadIt, the actress was asked about her comments — which had several media outlets confirming that she is bisexual — during a press conference at Cannes. Blanchett says that there was more to her interview than what Variety Magazine decided to publish.

“From memory, the conversation ran: ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said: ‘Yes, many times. Do you mean have I had sexual relationships with women? Then the answer is no.’ But that obviously didn’t make it.”

Aside from Blanchett saying she was misquoted, she also spoke out about her views on the whole “who you love” thing. She says that she has taken on different roles throughout her career that have encompassed all kinds of things (including sexuality), but hasn’t thought about it more than her job. She feels as though what goes on in her personal life — or anyone else’s for that matter — shouldn’t be anyone’s business, really.

“In 2015 the point should be: who cares? Call me old fashioned, but I thought one’s job as an actor was not to present one’s own boring, small, microscopic universe but to raise and expand your sense of the universe, to make a psychological and empathic connection to another character’s experience so you can play them. So you can present another world to an audience.”

According to Perez Hilton, the journalist who interviewed the actress is standing by his work, and took to social media to say that he quoted Blanchett correctly.

If Cate Blanchett wasn’t misquoted, it’s possible that she was misunderstood. She doesn’t seem to want people to label her as bisexual, but whether she is or isn’t still seems to be up for debate for one reason or another. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, some believe that Blanchett made the comments on purpose as some sort of publicity stunt.

“It seems odd that this issue hasn’t come up before now. She has been married for 18 years and has never before hinted that she was a lesbian, or possibly bisexual, when she was younger,” said Susie O’Brien from the Herald Sun.
