NBC Renews ‘Smash’ For Second Season

NBC decided that the mega-hyped Broadway themed Smash is indeed a hit with its audiences and renewed it for another season.

Ex-Idol contestant Katherine McPhee, and newcomer Megan Hilty star as rivals gunning for the coveted Marilyn Monroe role for the fictional Broadway play based on her relationship with Joe DiMaggio.

The show features numbers by the pair, flashy sets, and choreographed dance numbers, as the audience takes a journey with the characters work shopping the most original play Broadway has seen in years–or at least that’s what they hope.

The network gave Smash a strong lead in, with its premiere right after the Superbowl. It proved to be a solid move for the series, which is the first developed by the new head of NBC Entertainment, Robert Greenblatt.

The hype around Smash has been huge, with NBC spending $25 million just for its promotion, which was a huge risk for a series that was previously dubbed months before as “another Glee”.

Even though Smash has found success, the viewership had dipped a bit in subsequent aired episodes. However, with that said, Smash is still NBC’s highest rated drama amongst adults 18-49 (2.6 rating), and total viewers is 7.7 million.

Megan Hilty had this to say about her experience working on Smash, “This role is a dream come true for me in many ways. Like my character, I eat, sleep, and breathe Broadway. I get to represent the Broadway community on television. That is such an honor. It is thrilling that both of these worlds exist in one. I love watching how our characters work together and do not work together. We both bring very different things to the table.”

Smash is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, and also stars Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston.
