Gillian Anderson’s return to Hannibal might be one of the most exciting reasons to tune in to Season 3 of the dark drama. Anderson isn’t just coming back — she’s coming back as a “bloody bride” and will play an important role. Warning, spoilers lie ahead.
Based on Thomas Harris’s novel, Red Dragon, NBC’s Hannibal explores the relationship between criminal profiler Will Graham (played by Hugh Dancy) and psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).
For many fans, Gillian Anderson’s character has been a highlight of the show. Appearing briefly on the first two seasons as Hannibal’s psychotherapist, Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Gillian has now been upgraded from recurring to a season regular. So far, Anderson’s character is mysterious and quiet while also sharing a dark history with Hannibal — a history that Gillian’s Bedelia hinted at, but the full story has yet to be revealed. With the news of Anderson becoming a series regular, more details may likely emerge.
Hannibal fans have had to wait over a year to find out what happens next, but that wait is almost over. Last season ended with Gillian’s character seen sitting next to Hannibal Lecter on an airplane heading to Italy. In a new teaser trailer released by NBC, Anderson is called the “bride of Hannibal.” What will that wedding be like? The couple may not actually get married, however, and could just pose as husband and wife instead, as pointed out on Buzzfeed.
Gillian and Mikkelsen’s scenes together as Bedelia and Hannibal shine. There’s a special dynamic between the two actors onscreen as their characters have a twisted relationship further complicated by their past. Their scenes left the viewer wanting more. While Anderson’s Bedelia seemed to be in quite a bit of danger last season, she’s also proven to have her own dark side as well when she was interviewed by Will Graham, never quite coming out with the whole truth but hinting that Hannibal is, indeed, a dangerous man. Will Bedelia face more danger? It’s guaranteed she will as indicated by the Season 3 trailer.

In addition to the news of Gillian Anderson’s casting, Star Trek: Into Darkness star Zachary Quinto will appear in at least one episode as a patient of Gillian’s Bedelia.
As the Inquisitr previously reported, Gillian is also reprising her character, Agent Dana Scully, in the X-Files revival coming soon. If you’re a fan of Gillian Anderson, you’re going to be seeing a lot of her soon.
Season 3 of Hannibal premieres June 4, less than a month away. Are you looking forward to seeing more of Gillian Anderson?
