March Massacre Continues As NC State Wolfpack Defeats Georgetown Hoyas

North Carolina State returned to the round of 16 on Sunday after upsetting third-seeded Georgetown in the men’s basketball NCAA tournament.

The game boiled down to the last 10.6 seconds when Lorenzo Brown hit three free throws in a row, propelling his team to a 66-63 victory.

First-year Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried joked about the win:

“When I went to Alabama as the head coach at the age of 33, John Wooden told me one time, he said, `Coach, don’t give them too much too fast. They might start expecting that every year.”

Gottfried then joked:

“Well, we failed in that category already.”

NC State (24-12) will now move on to face Purdue or Kansas on Friday in St. Louis.

The Wolfpack managed to fend off a comeback by the Hoyas (24-9) and now a second attack by Georgetown. Not bad for an 11th seed team.

It’s been a long road for the Wolfpack who won national titles in 1974 and then again in 1983. The team is often overshadowed by the programs at Duke and North Carolina University.

To push them towards another victory the team’s defense when on a 12-0 fist half run including seven points by Williams that turned an eight-point deficit into a three-point lead heading into halftime.

Even with Hollis Thompson shooting for 23 points the Hoyas simply couldn’t overcome the 11th seed team and their defensive play.

Are you surprised that yet another top seeded team has been knocked out of the NCAA tournament after many brackets were already destroyed in early week play?
