Big Bang Theory Spoiler: Sparks Set To Fly On Thursday Night’s Episode ‘The Maternal Combustion’

What do Laurie Metcalf and Johnny Galecki have in common? They both feature in The Big Bang Theory, of course, but they both also starred in the hit TV show Roseanne in the early 90’s where Metcalf played the role of Galecki’s girlfriend Darlene’s Aunt Jackie.

Fast forward twenty years and change programs to The Big Bang Theory, and Metcalf guest stars in the role of Galecki’s roommate Sheldon’s mother.

They’re both also going to have the eyes of millions of viewers on them when the penultimate episode of The Big Bang Theory airs on Thursday night.

The Maternal Combustion,” the 23rd episode of this season, brings together Leonard’s (Galecki) and Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) mothers together for the first time, CBS shared.

Sheldon’s and Leonard’s mothers have both appeared on The Big Bang Theory in the past, but this will be the first time they’ve guest starred in the same episode, and their first meeting. And, as Christian Today report, sparks are set to fly in this episode, as the women couldn’t be further apart in their belief systems. While Leonard’s mother is a successful psychiatrist and neuroscientist, Sheldon’s mother is a devoted Christian. And neither women are afraid to let their opinions be known.

If their belief systems and vocations weren’t enough of a difference, the two women also have very different ideas of child rearing and the role of a mother. Leonard’s mother is portrayed as a cold-hearted, clinical yet highly intelligent psychiatrist, while Sheldon’s mother is maternal, loving and warm, notes Latin Post.

The mothers do have one thing in common though: an interest in Sheldon. Sheldon’s mother is in town to celebrate her son receiving a science award, and while Leonard’s mother is also in town for a similar reason – to celebrate Leonard’s science win – her maternal side gives way to her clinical nature and she shows much more interest in Sheldon than in her own son. Leonard’s mother has previously shown a strange interest in evaluating and studying Sheldon as a psychiatric phenomenon, and she’s not about to let up.

The Big Bang Theory‘s executive producer Steve Molaro revealed to TVLine that both mothers continue to knock heads and compete while “doting on Sheldon” and “pushing Leonard off to the side.” While Leonard is somewhat used to standing in Sheldon’s shadow, the fact that this is being perpetuated by his own mother will surely deal an additional blow to Leonard’s ego.

Join the millions of viewers in the country and worldwide and watch the situation unfold on Thursday night.
