Tony Nominations Announced: See Which Hollywood Stars Got Honors

This morning, the Tony Award nominations were announced by Mary Louise-Parker and Bruce Willis. While there were plenty of Broadway vets, a lot of the nominations resembled an Academy Awards line-up due to the numerous Hollywood actors and actresses that picked up nominations for their contributions on the stage.

Among some of the names are Bradley Cooper, who returned to the stage to reprise his role in The Elephant Man. Another nominee from The Elephant Man is actress Patricia Clarkson. Actor Bill Nighy will have to go against Cooper for his work in Skylight. Other actors in Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play include Steven Boyer (Hand to God), Ben Miles (Wolf Hall Parts One & Two), and Alex Sharp (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).

Showtime’s The Affair actress Ruth Wilson has earned her first Tony nomination for her work in the play Constellations. Gatsby actress Carey Mulligan will have to duke it out in the same category for her work in Skylight. Dame Helen Mirren also snagged a nomination for her work in The Audience, as well as Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss for The Heidi Chronicles. The last performer for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play is Geneva Carr for Hand to God.

As for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Inception’s Ken Watanabe is nominated for The King and I. Among those nominated are, Michael Ververis (Fun Home), Robert Fairchild (An American in Paris), Brian d’Arcy James (Something Rotten!), and Tony Yazbeck (On the Town).

For Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, some of Broadway’s favorites got top honors, including Kristin Chenoweth for On the Twentieth Century, Kelli O’Hara (The King and I), Chita Rivera (The Visit), Beth Malone (Fun Home), and Leanne Cope (An American in Paris).

While the Tony nominations made headlines, there’s still those that felt the sting of being snubbed. One in particular is Glee’s Matthew Morrison for Finding Neverland, which was a shock to many. Others snubbed were Glenn Close (A Delicate Balance), Jake Gyllenhaal (Constellations), John Lithgow (A Delicate Balance), Tony Danza (Honeymoon in Vegas), Ewan McGregor (The Real Thing), and Stockard Channing (Other Desert Cities).
