‘Resident Evil HD’ Sells 1 Million, Breaks PSN Record

Capcom has announced that its latest Resident Evil HD remake, released in January, has now sold more than 1 million units worldwide, according to reports. The game is currently available for a wide range of platforms, including Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Writing in a blog post on their website, Capcom has said that Resident Evil HDs success if primarily down to the fans.

“Survival horror lives! The critically acclaimed HD update to Resident Evil (released this past January) has now sold over one million units worldwide. This is in part because the dev team made a great product, but also because of the excellent word of mouth and general praise fans shared about the title. We want to thank everyone for rediscovering this modern classic – or thank you for trying it for the first time. Hope you finished it as Chris AND Jill!”

In addition, Resident Evil HD set a new record for the “biggest-selling day one digital title” on the PlayStation Network, the publisher said. Capcom further explained that this record is for first-day sales volume in North America and Europe. It’s unclear what game Resident Evil HD unseated from the top.

Resident Evil HD also becomes Capcom’s fastest-selling digital title in the company’s history for North America and Europe. What’s more, Resident Evil HD’s sales helped the entire Resident Evil franchise reach more than 65 million units sold as of March 31.

Originally released in 1996, Resident Evil was created by Shinji Mikami, who has since left Capcom and now works for the Bethesda-owned Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks. Capcom released the first remake of the original Resident Evil game back in 2002, for the GameCube. This latest version is in fact an HD version of that remake, featuring new gameplay elements such as more camera control options along with better visuals.

The news comes not long after the announcement that Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has been remastered for the PS4 and Xbox One and a new patch aims to make the PS4 version look that much better. For whatever reason, when the newest Resident Evil game hit next generation consoles a few weeks ago, there was a pretty obvious deficiency in the framerate between the Xbox One and PS4 versions. This new patch is said to bring Resident Evil: Revelations 2 on the Sony Playstation 4 up to par with the Microsoft version.

So far, Resident Evil HD is only available through digital release and there has been no announcement made as to whether or not a retail version of the game will be released.
